There's much handwringing amongst the world airline executives to try and figure out how to increase revenue by charging customers for extra services without alienating them.
Earlier this year the well known and irreverent Chief Executive for Ryanair, Europe's largest low-fares airline, Michael O'Leary, confirmed that the company is examining the possibility of passengers paying to use the onboard toilets in a drive to keep costs down and lower Ryanair's guaranteed lowest fares even further. This tongue-in-cheek comment sparked an idea to invite passengers to suggest the airline's next ancillary revenue idea.
The Europe wide competition invited passengers to submit their most ingenious, wacky and creative ideas to Ryanair via their website to have a chance of winning a £1,000 cash prize.
Some of the most interesting suggestions were:
Charging for toilet paper - with O'Leary's face on it!
Charging £2.50 to read the safety cards
Charging £1 to use oxygen masks
Charging £2 "corkage" fee for passengers who bring their own food on-board
